Programme description

The BSc programme in Electrical Engineering (EEB) at Technische Hochschule Mannheim is offered in three different focuses to choose from:

• E-Mobility and Autonomous Driving
• Automation and Industrial Internet of Things
• Power Engineering and Renewable Energies

Electromobility is an important building block for addressing climate change.

In combination with Autonomous Driving, an exciting and dynamic technology field is developing around the mobility of tomorrow.

For Germany as an industrial location, especially for the automotive and supplier industries, it is important that there are enough enthusiastic young engineers for its economy to continue to be competitive in this field.

The Bachelor programme Electrical Engineering - Electromobility and Autonomous Driving includes for example

• energy storage
• charging infrastructure
• networked sensors
• artificial intelligence
• efficient and powerful drives
• safety as well as user-friendly operating concepts and applications.

You can expect classes with

• a lot of practical activity
• state-of-the-art laboratories
• individual support and small teaching groups
• close contact with local industrial partners
• interesting content and future-oriented projects and a lot of fun.

After this degree programme you will be very well prepared for the job market and can work as an engineer in important future technical areas. Both pay and career outlook are good.

Career fields and opportunities

• Graduates of electrical engineering, both Bachelor and Master, are highly sought after in many areas. Electrical engineers are irreplaceable, today, and in the future, in important areas such as mobility, sustainable use of our resources or intelligent networks and secure production systems.
• The activities are many and varied, such as project management in technical development, in production but also in sales. Many follow a career in management.
• You do not have to make a decision yet about which area you will be active in. You have the opportunity to get to know a number of companies and fields of work to help you know what lies ahead of you.

Study Content

BSc Electrical Engineering (EEB) with a focus on E-Mobility and Autonomous Driving consists of

1st & 2nd semester: Language of instruction is English *

• Foundation studies with fundamentals in Maths, Physics, Computing, Electrical Engineering, intensive German language training

3rd & 4th semester: Language of instruction is German from 3rd semester onwards *

• Advanced studies with specific topics according to the chosen focus:

E-Mobility and Autonomous Driving: Electrical Machines, Sensor Networks, Signal Processing, Energy Storage, Artificial Intelligence

5th semester: Internship in industry

6th & 7th semester: Specialisation in topics of semesters 3+4 by elective courses and research projects

7th semester: Research projects: Study projects at the university and Bachelor research project at the university or in industry

  • The first two semesters are in English, from the third semester onwards all technical lectures and exams are in German.

German language training

• The international Bachelor programme in Electrical Engineering (EEB) is a bilingual programme. You can study the first two semesters in English, combined with intensive German language classes. German students may also choose to study the English programme in order to improve their English language skills. From the third semester onwards, all courses are in German. Intensive language training runs parallel to the engineering programme and during semester breaks, giving you the best study support possible.

• We lead our international EEB students up to higher German level DSH2 during their Bachelor studies with us. The German language training is an integrated part of the EEB programme and compulsory.

Lecturers

We teach in small classes with individual support, providing

• close collaboration between students, professors and the department
• personal atmosphere, it is always possible to contact professors with any questions
• dedicated staff available as contact persons in the laboratories
• tuition and learning groups formed among our students

Audience

We are looking for international students with a strong interest in technology, innovation and problem-solving

• from all over thew world
• who are interested in gaining a high-quality education in Germany, known for its engineering excellence and strong industry connections
• with good English language skills and interest in learning German as preparation for living, studying and working in Germany.

Accreditation

The programme is accredited as per national standards, by Acquin and Stiftungsrat Akkreditierung.
General requirements

• A higher education entrance qualification to study at a German university is required, at the level of a German secondary school leaving certificate. Some countries' higher education entrance qualifications aren't equivalent to our German level, so applicants from these countries need to have additional academic experience. This can be a certain number of successful semesters at a recognised university at Bachelor level in a relevant subject (for EEB in engineering). Or alternatively one successful year at a Studienkolleg type T.
• We can´t accept predicted grades for admission, we need your final results.
• If your school leaving certificate isn´t available within our application period or if a higher academic level than your school leaving certificate is required, you could apply with a SAT or ACT test score and later submit your school leaving certificate.
• No conditional admission will be given.
• Our admissions committee focuses on Maths and Physics.

Language requirements

• English language proof: IELTS minimum 6.5 (overall) or TOEFL minimum 88 (IBT) or OTE minimum 130

• German language proof: German is not an admission prerequisite as EEB starts in English. However, we recommend German level A2 for a good start in Germany.

Funding

• The best way to cover your living expenses is to use a blocked account. You will need a blocked account to apply for a visa anyway.
• If you need to earn money while studying, make sure that you know the relevant work regulations that match your residency title. Students are limited in terms of hours they can work per week and amount.
• We don´t encourage our international EEB students to work more than 10 hours per week.
• The EEB programme is very intense, especially in the first year, when we combine our technical lectures with intensive German language courses.
• We are unable to offer scholarships for first year international students.
• Tuition jobs are available for higher semester students.
